OTFA Provincial Bantam/Midget/Junior Indoor Championships

Athletes of the Hamilton Olympic Club wrapped up the 2007-08 indoor competitive season on a high note at theOTFA Bantam/Midget/Junior Championship Meet.

Sean MacKinnon ran a strong race in the Bantam Boys 800m, finishing with a fourth place time of 2:27.07.  In the Bantam Girls 800m, Heather Summers blew away the field with a gold medal performance of 2:36.30, while Morgan Ryder ran hard for a seventh place finish of 2:47.28.

In the Midget Girls group, sprint-newcomer Kayla Harrop established new "personal bests" in her events posting times of 8.72sec (60m) and 28.62sec (200m). Kayla's improvements should continue as she makes the transition to outdoor competition. In the 800m race, Chelsea MacKinnon had a superb race as she took fourth place with a time of 2:24:44, while Rina Charalampis and  Meg Inman ran to 12th and 13th place finishes. Michelle St. Pierre had a personal best result in the 1500m with a time of 6:09.92.  Meanwhile, in the shot put event, Alyssa DiCesare heaved the shot 9.36m to earn her a second place finish.   Alyssa's performances continue to show the results of her hard work.  Over at the high jump, Emily Kawaguchi had a clearance of 1.50m for a bronze medal placing.

Midget Boys middle distance runners had quite the weekend!   On Saturday Austen Forbes ran a strong 1500m race to win a bronze medal placing with his personal best 4:26.85 result while brother Taylor finished strongly in 5th place with a time of 4:31.03. Adam Rowles shaved several seconds off his personal best, running 4:55.02 for 15th place in his first OTFA Championships. The next day, the trio returned to the scene of their efforts to compete in the 800 race. Austen ran a hard fought battle in the 800m to finish just out of the medals with a time of 2:08.64, while brother Taylor came 11th in 2:16.56 and Adam Rowles ran 2:22.66 for his 15th place finish.

Leading the way once more in the Junior Women's category was Katie Klodnicki who managed to earn a bronze medal finish in the weight throw with a toss of 8.97m. In the shot put event, where the leg she had injured a few days prior to the meet proved to be a real handicap, Katie placed 10th with a heave 8.99m.

On the track, the junior women's group seemed to be always on the go. In the 60m event, Tamar Brereton saved her best performance of the season and blazed her way to a personal best time of 8.29sec. Natasha Auret and Kristen Boonstra ran times of 8.72sec and 9.03sec respectively, with Natasha’s time also being a personal best over this distance. In the 200m, Simone Mallett-Forde led the HOC women with a 28.32sec performance, followed by Chantelle Robbertse (28.88sec), Natasha Auret (29.03sec –another PB), and Kristen Boonstra  (29.47sec).  Tamar would then turn in a fine 1:01.43sec (11th) performance in the 400m followed by Kristen's 1:07.2 (41st).

Kelly Morrison would also have a fine three-event performance over the course of the two-day meet, posting results of  9.75sec in 60mHurdles (9th place - just missing out on qualifying for the final); 5.17m in the long jump competition (4th place) and 1.55m in the high jump (8th place).  Kelly was followed closely in this latter event by teammate Chantelle Robbertse who successfully cleared 1.50m in the high jump for a 9th place finish.   Jillian Wyman came off the “odd-distance” university season to race to a personal best and fifth place finish of 2:15.66 in the 800m.   Meanwhile, Samantha Beattie contested the 1500m distance and came through with a 5:12.81 effort followed by Rebecca Masten-Davies with a season best of 5:19. Rebecca returned on Sunday to finish 21st in a strong 3000m field.

On the men's side, only four Junior competitors suited up for HOC over the weekend.
Damion Vassell pulled double-duty competing in the 200m (22.80sec  - sixth place and good for a personal best) and had great leap of 6.60m in the long jump competition to finish in fourth place.  James Noordam was a fine finisher in the 400m with a time of 56.12sec, while Brandon Smith put forth a personal best effort with his 4:29.50 finish in the 1500m.  Mike DiCesare, competing in the shot put event, launched the shot 11.90m for a ninth place result.

Congratulations to all for a great indoor session and continued success through the outdoor season!

OTFA Provincial Youth/Senior Indoor Championships

Katie Klodnicki continues to lead the way for HOC athletes. After the first day of competition at the 2009 Youth/Senior Provincial Championships, Katie Klodnicki leads the medal charge with 2 gold-medal performances. With first place finishes in both the Youth Weight Throw and Shot Put events, Katie continues to set the pace for HOC athletes during the indoor season. Klodnicki saved her best effort for the very end in the Weight Throw taking the event with a Personal Best throw of 9.48m. She would double her golden haul later in the Shot Put with a toss of 10.60m.
Alyssa DiCesare (competing out of her age group) garnered a 5th place finish in the Shot Put with a throw of 7.75m

Meanwhile, on the track, the women's contingent of  60m runners continued to show progress and improvement in the event. Leading the way for the women in the 60m event was Simone Mallett posting a Personal Best time of 8.30s (in the preliminary round) and then lowering her PB again in the "B-Final" with an excellent time of 8.28s  for a 14th place overall finish.
Tamar Brereton would follow closely with another Personal Best time of 8.32s (17th). Brittany Kadwell was close behind Brereton with an 8.55s
(18th) with new-comer Elisha Ladeza (competing two age groups up and setting a Personal Best) at 8.61s (32nd), Natasha Auret (also setting a Personal Best) 8.82s (37th) and Kristen Boonstra 9.04s (41st). Brereton would also post a time of 1:02.01 in the 400m event (6th).

James Noordam (the only male competing in the running events) posted times of 60m - 7.6s (19th) and 400m - 56.09s  (19th).

In the Youth High Jump event, Kelly Morrison (competing in her first of three events on the weekend) narrowly missed equalling her Personal Best slightly clipping the bar at 1.65m. Kelly won the silver medal with a jump of 1.60m.

Leading the charge for the Sprinters was multi-event athlete Kelly Morrison who would qualify in the 60mH event with a 9.84s mark and slowed slightly in the final to post a time of 9.89s for a 6th place finish overall.
Meanwhile, back on the oval, the 200m runners were participating in the one-lap sprint this time lead by Tamar Brereton's 16th place finish (27.32s).
Newcomer Chantelle Robbertse was the second finisher in the HOC group with a time of 28.92s (35th) followed by Elisha Ladeza (28.96s - 38th), Simone Mallett (29.07s - 42nd), Natasha Auret (29.31s - 45th) and Kristen Boonstra (29.35s - 47th).
Morrison would also conclude the competition for HOC athletes in the Long Jump competition where she placed 9th with a leap of (4.59m) achieved in the opening round of the competition.

Aimee Castro was also busy as she garnered a 16th place in the 800m with a time of 2:26.10, followed by a seventh place finish in the 1500m (4:56.00).
Ahmed Khalif competed in the Senior Men’s 3000m run and placed fourth with a run of 8:56.94.

Meanwhile, at the Ontario Masters Track and Field Association Championship Meet, Rhona Trott (59) participated in a variety of events.   She earned a silver medal in both sprints with a 9.57sec clocking in the 60m dash and a ‘nipped-at-the-wire’ 32.94sec performance in the 200m.   In the 60mHurdles, Trott set a meet record with a time of 11.81sec to win the gold medal.
In the shot put, she won gold again with a result of 7.65m.   Later, in the high jump competition, Trott set a Canadian record with her winning 1.17m leap.

Indoor Prospect Series Meet #3
This meet, hosted at the University of Western Ontario in London, ON, was an amazing opportubnity for our HOC throwers to show some muscle. Katie Klodnicki (1992), who did well at her first meet just two weeks ago, again showed power in the Shot Put (4kg) with a distance of 10.71m. Alyssa DiCesare (1994) also with a strong performance in the Shot Put (3kg) with 9.60m.

OMTFA Indoor Pentathlon Championship
The Ontario Masters Track and Field Association held its first ‘stand-alone’ indoor pentathlon championship at York University on the weekend.
Rhona Trott, 59, competed in the event for the Hamilton Olympic Club.   In the first event, the 60mHurdles, she set a Canadian age group record of 11.29 sec (925 points).   She had a leap of 3.55m in the long jump 503 (points), followed by a personal best shot put performance of 8.33m (704 points).    Difficulties with her take-off leg meant that Trott was only able to jump 1.12m in the high jump (610 points).   The final event, 800m, gave her a slightly better result, 3:13.02 (558 points), than that achieved last month, but still slower than she would like to run.
The total points score, 3300, would also have established a new Canadian W55 age group record.   Due to the lack of other female competitors, Trott did the competition with the men – following their order of events, which meant that the points record cannot be officially recognized.

OTFA Indoor Relay Championships and Combined Events

submitted by Coach George Kerr

HOC athletes were back on track this past weekend with a couple of promising debuts from newcomers Simone Mallett and Katie Klodnicki.

Mallett showed little sign of being a newcomer to indoor competition, posting a very respectable 8.37s in the 60m event. Leading the way for the women in the 60m Sprints for HOC was Emma Roung. Emma qualified for the “B” final posting a qualifying time of 8.19s and finished 13th overall with a final time of 8.07s. Tamar Brereton continues her improvement in the short sprints with a PB clocking of 8.35s (26th). Mallett was a close 27th with a time of 8.37s.
Natasha Auret posted a PB time of 8.95s (45th) followed closely bt Kristen Boonstra 8.99s (47th) and newcomer Chantelle Robbertse (50th) in 9.16s. In the women’s 60mH event, Kelly Morrison clocked a time of 9.94s (good for 6th place).

In the Throws events, Alyssa DiCesare continues to excel heaving the shot 8.94m which garnered her a 2nd place finish in the Midget Girls Division.
Katie Klodnicki (in her first competition as a member of HOC) finished a strong 6th in the Open Women’s Shot Put with a distance of 10.03m. Katie would also place 4th in her debut in the indoor Hammer Event with a distance of 9.16m.
In the Men’s competition, Mike DiCesare carried the banner for HOC and finished in 3rd place in the Open Men’s 6kg event with a toss of 11.35m.

Congratulations to all athletes on their results this past weekend.

In addition to the above athletes, two HOC members have been hard at work competing for their university team at McMaster University. Jillian Wyman (Junior) posted personal bests in the 600m with 1:37.49 for 6th place, and the 1000m with 2:55.61 which was enough for her to take first. Noah Fleming also did very well in the Senior men's 600m with 1:22.84 for 3rd place.

Sophomore Sprinter Emma Roung leads the way for HOC sprinters.
Emma continues to show continued progress and great speed as she lead the way for all the female HOC sprinters in the open 60m event despite obvious symptoms of illness.
Clocking the 3rd fastest qualifying time in the preliminaries, Roung finished 4th overall in the "A" final despite being the youngest athlete in the field. She ran a slightly faster (7.95s) time in the final (7.98s in preliminary).

HOC also qualified 3 other competitors in the Women's 60m "B" final.
Tamar Brereton posted times of 8.45s (prelims) and 8.38s (B-final) for a very commendable 10th place finish overall. Tamar's hard work seems to be paying dividends as her times continue to improve.
Multi-event athlete Kelly Morrison, competing in only two events on the day also ran well in the open 60m posting back to back times of 8.80s in the prelims and "B" Final for a 14th place overall finish. Kelly's consistency will be the key for her success through the indoor and on to the outdoor season.
Newcomer Kristen Boonstra ran well technically and overcoming nervousness in her first indoor race also qualified for the "B" final with a preliminary run of 8.87s and a final run of 8.91s in the final to place 15th overall.

Rounding out the field of competitors for the women in the 60m event  (and despite having only trained for a few weeks) newcomer Natasha Auret posted a time of 9.1s in the preliminary round. Natasha, overcame a shaky start (caused obviously by nerves in her first ever indoor 60m) and went on to run well in the first round.

On the men's side, only James Noordam suited up for HOC. James ran well but failed to progress to the finals having run a 7.79s in the heats.

In the women's 60mH, Morrison  again showed her improved sprinting speed, this time over the hurdles finishing 2nd overall in the event in a very close finish.

In the 300m event Tamar Brereton ran a sensational race posting a career best 43.18s for 7th place overall. Again, newcomer Kristen Boonstra followed up her 60m debut with a gutsy first-time 300m run in a very solid 47.44s good for 12th place overall.

Noordam would wrap up the competition for HOC athletes on the men's side with his debut in the 300m event posting a time of 39.69s for 17th place overall.

Phoenix All Comers (see full results here)
HOC was delighted that Kayla Harrop, a talented Intermediate program athlete was able to represent the Club at the recent Phoenix All Comers Meet.
Kayle ran two events, and did so very well! In the Women's 50m Open Dash, Kayla placed 4th in the preliminary round with a time of 7.49s. In teh finals, Kayla repeated the th place finish with another excellent time of 7.54s. In the Women's 300m Open Dash, Kayla did extremely well, with a top tne finish in 50.08s (10th). Kayla shows a strong competitive spirit, even against those older than she. Good work, Kayla!

OTFA Masters Pentathlon
At the first indoor meet of the year, the Ontario Masters Track and Field Association held a pentathlon.
Competing for the Hamilton Olympic Club, Rhona Trott, 59, had a successful series of events.
She ran the 60mHurdles in 11.53sec, less than a tenth of a second off her personal best.   In the high jump,
She cleared a height of 1.15m, then had a 7.52m toss in the shot put.   With only three attempts in the long jump, the pentathletes have to make the best of every effort.   On her second jump, not only did Trott set a personal best for the indoor long jump event, she also established a Canadian record for the W55 age group with a leap of 3.72m.  The 800m proved to be an ordeal in the dry air of the York University complex, as she only managed a time of 3:16.38.
The total of 3252 points (again, close to her personal best) was enough to give Trott first place in the pentathlon event.
