November 27-29, 2009 - International Youth Meet of Champions @ York
University (TTFC)
Hamilton Olympic Club athletes have taken to the track with
vigour in this new indoor season. At the International Youth
Meet of Champions, Christian Brennan won the midget girls
400m race with a swift 58.14sec performance. This event was sandwiched
between heats, semis and finals of the 60m dash, where she ran 7.77sec
for second place. Midget-aged Alyssa DiCesare took the gold
medal in the 3kg shot put contest with a throw of 11.16m. In the
youth category, Gesthika Kaltsidis secured a second place
finish of 10.36m in the triple jump, while earning a sixth place
4.85m finish in the long jump. Lindsay Wallace was busy,
too, as she came fourth in the 60mHurdles with a 9.83sec result
and a 4.86m leap (one centimetre ahead of Gesthika) for fifth place
in the long jump.
January 9, 2010
- Sharon Anderson Memorial Meet @ University of Toronto
The University of Toronto track was the site of the Sharon Anderson
Memorial Meet. Several Hamilton Olympic Club athletes
took part in the event.
Midget-aged Christian Brennan ran two fast races to finish
third in the final of the 60m dash, then added a fifth place finish
of 43.55 sec in the 300m race.
In the youth-aged events, Lindsay Wallace had a busy day
as she claimed second place in the 60mHurdles with a 10.24sec sprint.
Later she threw 8.08m in the shot put and had a leap of 4.82m in
the long jump for seventh place. Alyssa DiCesare put the
shot 9.18m to finish sixth. Gesthika Kaltsidis, in her first
meet as a junior-aged athlete, soared 10.46m to finish seventh in
the triple jump, while her long jump performance of 4.55m netted
her an eleventh place finish.

January 24,
2010 - Ontario Masters 2010 Winter Mini Meet #3 @ York University
(TTFC)
At the Ontario Masters 2010 Winter Mini Meet #3,
Rhona Trott, showed consistent effort in the 12-lb weight
throw as she gave it an 11.72m heave. She also had a 9.69sec showing
in the 60m dash and a 3.66m leap in the long jump.

January 30,
2010 - Ontario Legion Indoor Championships @ York University (TTFC)
On Saturday January 30, 2010, the Ontario Legion Indoor Championships
were held in Toronto. In the 15-and-under age category, Christian
Brennan equalled her season's best of 7.71sec in winning the
60m dash. Half an hour later, she took gold in the 400m with a time
of 57.1sec; then completed her personal version of the triathlon
with a 4.87m leap to win the long jump competition. Also contesting
the 400m race were Becky Morrison, who took eighth place
with a 65.13sec clocking, and Marissa Codispodi, close behind
in 67.47sec. In the boys division, Liam Smith came away with
two personal best performances. He came sixth in the 800m with a
time of 2:17.0; then raced to a bronze medal spot in the 1500m with
his 4:34.54 result. The 17-and-under age group saw Meg Inman
race to a gold medal finish in the 800m with a 2:25.8 time, after
she'd already come fifth in the 400m with a 62.70sec performance.
Lindsay Wallace was working on three of her pentathlon events:
coming third in the high jump with a leap of 1.45m, eighth in the
shot put with a 7.99m effort and eighth in the 60mHurdles with her
best time of 9.78sec. Alex Russell also ran to an eighth
place finish in the 1500m with a 4:30.73 clocking, while Anthony
Perrodou ran 10:18.0 to take 13th place in the 3000m race.

January 31,
2010 - AO Multi-Events Championships @ York University (TTFC)
The Athletics Ontario Multi-Events Championships was held
in conjunction with the first 'Prep' Meet of the year. Lindsay
Wallace competed in the youth girls pentathlon event. She had
three seasonal best performances: 60mH in 9.67sec, high jump of
1.47m and 800m run of 2:42.28. Solid results in the shot put (8.04m)
and long jump (4.57m), allowed her to claim the bronze medal in
the first championship of the year. Christian Brennan also
had an outstanding meet, coming fourth in the 60m dash (7.79sec)
followed by an AO under-16 record in the 200m with her first place
24.99sec result. Alyssa DiCesare took third in the 4kg shot
put event with her 9.06m toss, while Gesthika Kaltsidis was
judged tenth with her 4.67m leap in long jump. Rugare Shatei
had his best showing of the year as he came tenth in the long jump
with 5.54m. Jeffrey Behan took a solid seventh place with
a 2:03.57 clocking in the 800m, while Greg LaRiviere ran
10:31.91 for ninth place in the 3000m race.

2010 - MTA Burlington/Guelph Meet @ York University (TTFC)

The Burlington and Guelph track and field clubs held a Minor
Track Association meet on the weekend at York University.
Members of the Hamilton Olympic Club used this occasion to test
themselves and to see how much improvement their coaches have helped
them achieve. Atom-aged Jenna Smith came away with a 'set
of medals'. She earned bronze with a fantastic 4.25m leap in the
long jump. Later, she ran 2:41.7 for the silver medal in the 800m
race, followed by a gold medal performance in the 400m of 66.9sec.
Close behind Jenna, Chloe Hewitt took the silver in the 400m
with her 67.7sec effort. She also earned a seventh place finish
in the 200m with a 30.06sec clocking. Madeline Leek had an
eighth place finish in the long jump with 3.82m, while Kennedy
Thomson came ninth in the 400m with a 1:17.7 result.
In the senior-aged competitions, Kylie Hopkins had an excellent
race in the 400m, as she ran 66.8sec.for a fourth place finish.
Kassidy Matthews had an impressive debut as she came fourth
in the 60m dash with her 8.60sec speed. She added two ninth place
finishes to her first meet results with 28.98sec in the 200m and
a 3.84m leap in the long jump. Also competing for the first time,
three girls each achieved a sixth place finish in different events.
Hailey Hemrica pushed hard to achieve a finish of 2:43.91
in the 800m, Thais Melnyk put forth a great effort in the
1500m race to earn a 5:53.5 result, and Oonagh Burns leaped
4.22m in the long jump. A 3.86m leap gave Leanne Maslowski
eighth place in the long jump competition.

University (TTFC)

Cameron McMillan, of the Hamilton Olympic Club, had as busy
a meet as anyone was allowed at the recent Minor Track Association
Championships at York University. He had a personal best
performance of 4:39.6 to take fourth place in the senior boys1500m
race, followed by another PB and fifth place in the 800m with a
time of 2:17.17 Meanwhile, he soared 9.61m to take silver in the
triple jump. In the senior girls category, HOC athletes all ran
to personal best times in the 400m dash, as they chased each other
closely around the track. Kylie Hopkins came sixth with 66.12sec,
with Val Gladiator coming eighth in 67.41 and Hailey Hemrica
ninth with 67.54sec. Kristen Davidson and Alyssa Hopkins
came close behind with their best times of 68.58 sec and 70.76sec
respectively. Thais Melnyk ran 5:35.5 in the 1500m before
earning a fifth place finish of 4.07m in the long jump. Chloe
Hewitt finished off her indoor season in the atom-girl age group
with a sixth place finish of 68.26sec in the 400m race, then won
the bronze medal in the 200m with a personal best time of 29.65sec.
Close behind her, Jenna Smith ran 68.30sec for seventh place
in the 400m, then she took the bronze medal with her 2:40.68 (personal
best) time for 800m. Madeline Leek, running in her first
MTA championship meet, had a personal best of 32.23sec in the 200m
race, while jumping 3.41m for 13th place in the long jump.

March 26-28,
2010 - USATF Masters Indoor Championships, Boston, Massachusetts
The indoor track and field season has come to an end. Rhona
Trott, W61, of the Hamilton Olympic Club, celebrated this
closing by attending the USATF Masters Championship Meet
in Boston, Massachusetts. On the first day, she competed in the
pentathlon, winning the gold medal with a total of 3658 points.
Although most of her performances scored less than what she had
achieved in Kamloops, she was still able to run a solid 3:14.05
for the finishing 800m event. The following day, she ran close to
her seasonal best with a third place 9.70sec result in the 60m dash.
Later, she raced to a thrilling 10.92sec clocking in the 60mHurdles
- claiming second place by 0.01sec! On the last day of competition,
Trott ran a seasonal best as she took the silver medal in the 200m
with a time of 32.63sec.

The Hamilton Olympic Club hosted the first Minor Track
Association (MTA) meet this past weekend with some outstanding
results from its young members. In the Atom Girls category (born
in 1998,1999), Chloe Hewitt had an outstanding day as she won the
400m in a time of 65.02sec, followed by a second place finish of
29.36sec in the 200m. Madeline Leek, also contesting the 200m, had
a strong finish of 30.53sec to place fifth. She also earned at third
place medal for her 3.24m leap in the long jump and had a strong
14.82sec fourth place in the 100m dash. Jenna Smith competed in
the high jump for the first time, placing first with her soaring
1.30m jump. She also earned two bronze medal results: 400m in 66.16sec
and 2:39.50 for 800m. Competing in her first MTA meet, Maria-Kristine
Rickard finished strongly in the 800m with a time of 2:56.57 for
fifth place. Trevor Hopkins took fourth place in the Atom Boys high
jump with a 1.20m result. The Senior Girls (born 1996,1997) were
a busy group. Savannah Laroche, another athlete competing in her
first meet, won the shot put with a 7.78m effort, then sent the
discus sailing with her 20.76m gold medal toss. Kassidy Matthews
made her presence felt in the sprints as she came third in the 100m
(13.60sec) and fifth in the 200m (27.89sec) She 'flew' 4.14m to
come second in the long jump, while Sarah Trentin-Evans had a personal
best result of 3.67m for fifth place. Cassidy Marticotte had a good
1.20m leap to come second in the high jump, while Leanne Maslowski
earned her second place finish with a 6.88m put of the shot. Another
first timer, Claire DePaul came third in the triple jump with a
fine 7.92m effort. Unfortunately, in the 100m final, she fell; her
semi-final time of 13.70sec could have placed her fourth in the
final had she been able to finish. Hailey Hemrica ran a strong race
to come fourth in the 400m with a time of 66.44sec. In the 100m
final, Kylie Hopkins gave a huge effort to finish fifth in 13.84sec.
Kristen Davidson had two personal best 200m 28.69 and 400m 1:07.80.
Not to be outdone, the Senior Boys kept themselves busy, too. Andrew
Holmes had a jump of 1.23m to claim second place in the high jump.
In his first meet, Brad Grightmire ran 62.99sec in the 400m for
fourth place, then returned for the 800m with a fine 2:30.65 effort
and fifth place.
The meet also served as the provincial championship for one of
the medley relays. The first person ran 400m, followed by two 200m
legs, with the final runner doing two laps (800m) of the track.
The Atom Girls' team not only won their age group, but also managed
to narrowly defeat not only the Senior Girls teams, but also the
Senior Boys. Chloe Hewitt (400m), Maria-Kristine Rickard (200m),
Kennedy Thomson (200m) and Jenna Smith (800m) ran a time of 4:54.19
to become the Ontario champions for the Atom Girls, while Kristen
Davidson (400m), Kylie Hopkins (200m), Kassidy Matthews (200m),
and Hailey Hemrica (800m) won the senior girls championship with
a time of 4:59.09. HOC was fortunate to have two teams in the older
age category; the foursome of Leanne Maslowski (400m), Cassidy Marticotte
(200m), Ashley Rose-Geczy (200m) and Emily Kennedy (800m) were recipients
of the silver medal with their 5:12.06 effort.

22, 2010 - Gord Rusby Memorial Track Meet @ Nelson HS, Burlington
(MTA Meet)
The second Minor Track Association (MTA) meet was held in
Burlington on Saturday May 22, 2010. Senior-aged athlete, Savannah
Laroche, of the Hamilton Olympic Club, had a personal best effort
of 8.52m in winning the shot put event, while Leanne Maslowski
placed third with her 7.24m result. Amanda Vertesi also gained
a third place finish with a 1.30m leap in the high jump. Hailey
Hemrica had a fourth place finish in the 400m event with a 65.27
sec run, while Kassidy Matthews raced to her fourth place
result with a 13.79sec time. She was closely followed by Kristen
Davidson in 13.88sec. Kassidy also claimed fifth place with
28.40sec in the 200m dash. The 4 x 200m relay was contested as the
provincial MTA championship event. The HOC team of Kristen, Kassidy,
Leanne and Hailey earned a hard-fought silver medal with their 1:56.84
effort. In the senior boys age division, Cameron McMillan
had a busy day. He took second place in two events -- 800m in 2:12.97
and 1500m with a 4:28.80 clocking - before adding a fourth place
leap of 9.16m in the triple jump. The 400m race saw Brad Grightmire
come fourth with his 61.06sec finish.
Action in the atom girls age group was also continuous. Chloe
Hewitt came first, in a very tight 400m race, with a 64.90sec
result, followed by a fourth place 29.95sec effort in the 200m.
Jenna Smith, who was hot on Chloe's heels in both races (400m
- second in 65.00sec and 200m - fifth in 30.18sec), had a great
1.31m leap in the high jump to take first place. Kennedy Thomson
jumped 1.15m to gain fourth place. In the long jump competition,
Maria-Kristine Rickard earned her third place with a 3.72m
distance, while Trevor Hopkins was fourth in the atom boys
long jump with his 3.44m leap. Once more, the 4 x 200m relay proved
to have a silver lining for the HOC team. Jenna, Kennedy, Chloe
and Michaela Sacchetti gave a good effort for their 2:05.23
finish.

2, 2010 - IAAF World Junior Championships, Moncton, New Brunswick
It was a grueling weekend for Hamilton Olympic Club runner,
Christian Brennan. Competing at the IAAF
World Junior Championships
Meet in Moncton, New Brunswick, she ran eight races in fifty
hours! On Friday, July 2, Christian ran a personal best time of
12.05sec in the preliminary round of the 100m. Eight hours later,
she beat her previous PB in the 100m with a 12.07sec clocking. In
between, she ran in the preliminary round of the 400m, setting another
personal best of 55.48sec in advancing to the final in seventh place
overall. Saturday proved to be quite a day! Christian started with
another PB of 54.15sec in the 400m as she ran to a
BRONZE MEDAL finish. An hour later, she came seventh
in a 100m final that was run into a strong wind. Three hours after
that, she ran in the preliminary round of the 200m, winning her
heat with a 24.85sec time. Sunday was a bit easier: only two 200m
races. In the morning, a semi-final time of 24.58sec advanced her
to the final. Another concentrated effort gave Christian a fifth
place finish against girls up to four years her senior.
Also competing at the meet was Grimsby High School's Katie Klodnicki,
formerly of the HOC, but now competing for the York University track
club,. On Sunday morning, she placed sixth in the women's hammer
throw with a toss of 39.71m Four hours later, she won a bronze
medal with a personal best throw of 41.44m in the discus event.
