HOC Sprinters Put on Great Showing at Early Season Meet
submitted by Coach George Kerr
Sophomore Sprinter Emma Roung lead the way for HOC sprinters at the University of Toronto Nike Classic on January 19th, 2008.
Emma continues to show continued progress and great speed as she lead the way for all the female HOC sprinters in the open 60m event despite obvious symptoms of illness.
Clocking the 3rd fastest qualifying time in the preliminaries, Roung finished 4th overall in the "A" final despite being the youngest athlete in the field. She ran a slightly faster (7.95s) time in the final (7.98s in preliminary).
HOC also qualified 3 other competitors in the Women's 60m "B" final.
Tamar Brereton posted times of 8.45s (prelims) and 8.38s (B-final) for a very commendable 10th place finish overall. Tamar's hard work seems to be paying dividends as her times continue to improve.
Multi-event athlete Kelly Morrison, competing in only two events on the day also ran well in the open 60m posting back to back times of 8.80s in the prelims and "B" Final for a 14th place overall finish. Kelly's consistency will be the key for her success through the indoor and on to the outdoor season.
Newcomer Kristen Boonstra ran well technically and overcoming nervousness in her first indoor race also qualified for the "B" final with a preliminary run of 8.87s and a final run of 8.91s in the final to place 15th overall.
Rounding out the field of competitors for the women in the 60m event (and despite having only trained for a few weeks) newcomer Natasha Auret posted a time of 9.1s in the preliminary round. Natasha, overcame a shaky start (caused obviously by nerves in her first ever indoor 60m) and went on to run well in the first round.
On the men's side, only James Noordam suited up for HOC. James ran well but failed to progress to the finals having run a 7.79s in the heats.
In the women's 60mH, Morrison again showed her improved sprinting speed, this time over the hurdles finishing 2nd overall in the event in a very close finish.
In the 300m event Tamar Brereton ran a sensational race posting a career best 43.18s for 7th place overall. Again, newcomer Kristen Boonstra followed up her 60m debut with a gutsy first-time 300m run in a very solid 47.44s good for 12th place overall.
Noordam would wrap up the competition for HOC athletes on the men's side with his debut in the 300m event posting a time of 39.69s for 17th place overall.

Trott Outdoes Herself Again at the OTFA Masters Pentathlon
At the first indoor meet of the year this Jan. 13/08, the Ontario Masters Track and Field Association held a pentathlon.
Competing for the Hamilton Olympic Club, Rhona Trott, 59, had a successful series of events.
She ran the 60mHurdles in 11.53sec, less than a tenth of a second off her personal best. In the high jump,
She cleared a height of 1.15m, then had a 7.52m toss in the shot put. With only three attempts in the long jump, the pentathletes have to make the best of every effort. On her second jump, not only did Trott set a personal best for the indoor long jump event, she also established a Canadian record for the W55 age group with a leap of 3.72m. The 800m proved to be an ordeal in the dry air of the York University complex, as she only managed a time of 3:16.38.
The total of 3252 points (again, close to her personal best) was enough to give Trott first place in the pentathlon event.

Great Results for HOC Athletes at July Meets
Jillian Wyman of the Hamilton Olympic Club competed in the University of Toronto's inaugural Kidd/Crothers Track and Field Meet on July 8th. She was the youngest competitor in the invitational women's 800m, where she place fifth with a personal best clocking of 2:12.71.
Elsewhere, thirteen year old Alyssa DiCesare continues to make her mark in the world of javelin competition. She broke the existing Ontario Bantam Girls’ record, at a meet in Guelph, with a throw of 29.14m -- a personal best by almost a metre.
At the Ontario Legion Championships in Ottawa, Emma Roung had a golden weekend, winning both the 100m (12.43sec) and 200m (25.65sec) in the Girls 15-and-under category. This has qualified her to attend the Canadian Legion Championship meet in New Brunswick early next month. Kelly Morrison, competing in the Girls 17-and-under age group, had a seventh place finish in the 100mHurdles with a time of 15.52sec while earning the silver medal in the long jump with a 5.24m performance. In the Boys 17-and-under division, Mike DiCesare, threw the shot for a distance of 11.96m to come eleventh, while sending the discus 38.88m to come in seventh place.
Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Rhona Trott, 58, had a busy three hours at the USTFA Masters East Region Championships. She threw the hammer for a personal best of 22.49m, then ran the 300mHurdles in 58.40sec. – despite the fact that an extra hurdle had been included ten metres from the end of the race!!! This race was followed by the 100m where she had to run with the ‘older’ men. This must have served as an inspiration as she improved her 2007 time to 15.14sec. In the long jump, Rhona only managed to get in one attempt, as she was everywhere else while this event was being contested. Her effort took her 3.48m. She also managed to attain a seasonal best of 1.18m in the high jump. On her way to throw the shot, she discovered she was entered in the 100mHurdle event – an event she has never contested. Not one to let this deter her, Rhona five-stepped the race and ran to a 19.62sec finish. Afterwards, it was pointed out that she had set a W55 Canadian record in the event – as no other Canadian woman had ever been so foolish to contest it!
Arriving at the shot put circle, she discovered that she had missed the first two rounds, but still managed to tie her seasonal best with a 7.81m effort. An hour later, the day of competition finished with her throw in the discus of 18.14m.
