Awards

September 2011

The Hamilton Olympic Club was well represented at the joint Athletics Ontario/Ontario Masters Athletics Awards dinner on the weekend.

In the youth girls' category, Christian Brennan was lauded as the winner of the sprint/hurdle award. Her exceptional performances throughout the year including winning medals at all Ontario and Canadian championship meets that she entered. At the World Youth Championship Meet in France, Christian led the national team standings with her two individual silver medals, as well as a relay bronze. She also set and improved on Canadian youth records in both the 200m and 400m races. Earlier this month, Christian was named as a member of the Canadian team that will be going to Guadalajara, Mexico for the Pan-American Games.

Savannah Laroche was honoured as the midget girls' throws award winner. She set an indoor record in winning the 20lb weight throw. As well as winning the Ontario Legion and midget girls' events,Savannah established Ontario records in both the under-15 and under-16 girls 3kg hammer throw with her performance at the Canadian Legion Championship Meet.

Runner-up in the bantam girls' age group jumping division was Jenna Smith. At the AO championship meet, Jenna cleared the bar with a personal best 1.51m to win the gold medal. Jenna was a member of the Hamilton team that competed at the International Children's Games in Lanarkshire, Scotland this past summer.

Recognized by Athletics Ontario for her contribution to track and field, in the builders' category, was Miss Margaret Lord. She was president of the Club in 1956 and served many terms, both before and after her presidency, as secretary. When she died in 1993, Miss Lord had a remarkable list of accomplishments to her name: manager of Canadian team at British Empire Games in 1934; manager and/or chaperone of Canadian teams at Olympic Games in 1936, 1952 and 1956; executive member of British Commonwealth Games Association; executive member of Amateur Athletic Union of Canada and executive member of the Canadian Olympic Association - usually being the first woman to have held any of the offices, including president, that she attained. Miss Lord is a member of the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame as a builder.

Ontario Masters Athletics elected Rhona Trott to its Hall of Fame. Rhona continues to be a competitive athlete in many different events, holding and/or having held Canadian records in the short and long hurdles, weight throw, hammer throw, long jump, pentathlon and heptathlon, as well as in the sprints. She has been a member of both the OMA and CMA board of directors and continues to serve as coordinator for the CMA throws records.
